Our local and international wine awards

Platter’s is the go-to guide to South Africa’s wines and estates.

Platter’s uses two judging methods: label-sighted and blind tasting (with no label showing)

Judges assess the wines sighted, to assist in learning as much as possible about the intent of the producer and the wine’s backstory, as well as vital details such as site and climate.

Wines scoring 93 points and higher in the primary (sighted) tasting round are re-assessed blind to find the Five Star laureates.

The Veritas Awards gives recognition to wines and brandies of exceptional quality and the distinctive Veritas symbol of excellence serves as an authoritative quality guideline for wine and brandy connoisseurs.

More than 120 international and local judges gather every year during September in the Cape winelands to judge the entries that cover the full spectrum of different styles and vintages. Wines and brandies are tasted blind by panels that consist of seven experts judging 10 wines/brandies at a time.

South Africa’s first dedicated rosé wine competition. It seeks to recognise excellence in rosé winemaking and promote the South African Rosé Wine category.

The two categories judged in this competition are Rosé Wine, and Sparkling and MCC Rosé. Results being audited by certified auditors.

The Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards was established in 1997 to offer South African producers the opportunity of having their wines adjudicated locally by a highly experienced and respected panel of professionals from around the globe.

The brainchild of Marius Labuschagne, renowned wine writer and marketeer from Durbanville. The Terroir Awards was established in 2005 and created to define the various terroir types of the Cape.

In 2019, ownership was transferred to the SA National Wine Show Association, an industry organisation which presents shows on behalf of the SA wine industry where it finds the ideal home for this terroir-driven competition.

The Gilbert & Gaillard group is “dedicated to the promotion and prescription of quality wines. representative of terroir and the know-how of passionate men and women.”

About the winemaker: JM Crafford

JM Crafford grew up in the small town of Darling, where his passion for wine grapes blossomed. Little did he know that the region of Darling produces some of the best grapes in the country, sought after by many. He spent many weeks in those hills pruning and doing canopy management to better understand the wine industry at the root level.

After completing his studies at Swartland, he obtained his B.Sc. Agric from the University of Stellenbosch while doing his practical at Darling Cellars. JM Crafford then gained further winemaking skills by working a season at Groote Post. He furthered his international experience by working at Rombauer Vineyards in Napa, California, for two years, and completing a season in Victoria, Australia, at Mitchellton Winery.

After gaining experience abroad, JM Crafford returned home and applied for an assistant winemaker’s position at Riebeek Cellars. After three years, he was promoted to Head Winemaker at Stettyn Family Vineyards, where he has been for ten years, and has been Head of Production for the last two years. Stettyn Cellar is known for its extraordinary terroir and hardworking people, which has helped shape JM Crafford’s winemaking philosophy.
